I cleaned the back side of the card thoroughly and then applied some heavy duty Scotch shipping tape to this side of the SIM card, and accurately trimmed all excess tape from around the edges of the SIM card with a very sharp knife.
This tape is exactly the thickness needed to make the new card thickness match the old cards. With the tape applied to the new card, the card now works in the phone. It appears that the SIM tray in this phone might be slightly off spec and very sensitive to even microscopic differences in SIM card thicknesses.
Anyone who tries this should take great care to insure the tape sticks to the card. You don't want that tape to end up stuck in your SIM tray. Since the SIM card is rarely removed from the tray for most people, I wouldn't expect any issues with the tape, as long as a high quality product is used.
