During an interview with AFI, Swayze felt he had a pretty good idea as to why the film has endured with audiences for so long.
Many brands caught on quite early that the film would be a big hit with young people. The famous acne skin-care company Clearasil initially wanted to join as a promotional sponsor, but they pulled out. In the s, when Dirty Dancing takes place, terminating a pregnancy was illegal in the U. Billed as a "re-imagining" of the original, the film released in , a full 17 years later.
The only thing the two films had in common were the words Dirty Dancing in the title. To make that happen, director Emile Ardolino pretty much threw a party every day.
Dance rehearsals often turned into disco parties, and the cast would have drinks and dance around to let loose. This tactic ended up being an excellent way for the actors to get to know each other and create a more relaxed atmosphere.
It also led to a lot of improvising by the cast while the cameras were rolling, which was encouraged. Watching the film today, you might be surprised to see a big-time actor like Wayne Knight playing such a small role.
Well, when Knight received the part, he had only done a few minor television and commercial roles. It was after his portrayal of a hilarious comedian who performed in the lodge talent show that his career blew up. He would go on to land the recurring role of mailman Newman on Seinfeld. When everyone finally buckled down and filming began, there was a sudden halt to production.
On the sixth day, things started going haywire. There was flooding on the streets surrounding the set, and one of the vans was destroyed. One of the set decorators fell off a ladder and hurt himself. The second assistant director broke her wrist, and the wardrobe assistant broke her toe.
Then, three of the crew members wound up with food poisoning. A month before the end of the shoot, the lead makeup artist quit and went home for personal reasons. Had the song not been picked up by producers, Swayze would have let the song sit and waste away. Houseman was given to Lynne Lipton. The role was given to Bishop after Lipton caused scheduling problems due to an illness that forced her to leave the set regularly.
When Bishop took the part of Mrs. Houseman, the role of Vivian was given to assistant choreographer, Miranda Garrison. Nevertheless, Swayze was adamant about doing all his scenes on his own. In the scene where Johnny and Baby dance on the log over the river, Swayze kept falling off. Apparently, he hit his already-injured knee a few times, causing even more damage. He had to have the fluid drained from his knee to reduce the swelling and avoid a bigger problem.
Seeing as he was already suffering from a knee problem beforehand, the situation had to be handled with the utmost delicacy. Regardless, knowing that Swayze did everything on his own makes the movie even more iconic. It took months of convincing to get Medley to do the song. He bans his daughter from any further association with "those people".
In the first deliberately willful action of her life, Baby later sneaks out to see Johnny, ostensibly to apologize for her father's rudeness, and ends up consummating her relationship with Johnny.
A jealous fellow vacationer sees Baby sneaking out of Johnny's bungalow the next morning, and in an act of retribution, tells management that he is responsible for a theft the evening before, knowing he would not furnish his real whereabouts. Have the time of your life. Did you know Edit. Trivia Patrick Swayze had to convince Jennifer Grey to be in this film, because she had disliked him so much while filming Red Dawn The film takes place in but Redding didn't record the song until , shortly before his death.
Quotes Baby : Me? Connections Edited into Lilyhammer: Out of Africa Produced by Phil Spector. User reviews Review. Top review. Original 'Feel good" dance epic -- often imitated Never Duplicated. This is one of those rare rare films that needs a 30 year break between the time of production and the time of the review in order to appreciate it.
Since I have seen this film 7 or 8 times. Each time it just gets better. As a Prolific Review here on the IMDb, I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of films that improve with age like that. This is literally the original "feel good" dance film -- which spawned dozens if not hundreds of imitations.
The script is perfect. The acting is perfect. The casting is perfect. The direction is perfect. And the music score is to die for. Nobody puts Baby in a corner? Well, nobody should ignore this film either! Also has an odd note of the "one hit wonder" label about it, which in my view only makes it more of a treat than it already is.
Swayze's career was unfortunately cut short. Jennifer Grey, who practically made this role a part of her DNA, had a nose job and the cynics say lost a lot of later roles because the casting directors were afraid no one would recognize her. The IMDb rating is a joke.
This is no less a classic in its genre than Maltese Falcon or the Matrix. Teens will get past such corny dialogue because of the dance sequences, which effectively mirror Baby and Johnny's emotions.
As the two become more drawn to each other, the dancing becomes more seductive, culminating in the liberating energy of the final scene. Dirty Dancing 's content may well be more mature than many parents remember; be sure to talk to kids about Penny's situation, and why things were so dire for her during the movie's '60s setting.
Families can talk about Dirty Dancing 's sexual themes. How is sex treated? What are the different aspects it takes? Parents, talk to your kids about your own values regarding sex and relationships.
How do you feel about the conflict between Baby and her father? Is one right and the other wrong, or is it more complex than that? Does their relationship feel realistic?
