Couple that with a cam that allows the engine to perform more efficiently. You have a small block chevy that sounds sweet and gets good gas milage. Nothing wrong with a if you already have one, but when you can actually get a cheaper in most cases, why not go big? The fact is simply the is a short stroke engine.

Its ability to make any substantial torque will always be limited by that fact. If you have a already, or somebody gives you one for free, build it up with the heads, add low rise 4 barrel, small carb, very mild cam and headers.

Thats about the best you can do to help out the mini-mouse motor. The definitely needs higher compression to have any chance, and those heads will bump up the C. One nice thing about using heads on a is eventually you can then use those same heads on a should you ever wish to upgrade the shortblock to something larger. I just wouldn't spend much or any money on anything internal like machining.

The head casting number I recommended has a 58CC combustion chamber, almost identical to the high compression head. Put 1. They're also something years newer and a lot easier to find.

It should work fine with the gaskets. It's not like it's some kind of ideal setup, but it would do Job 1. It will be cheaper. PLus you have to consider rebuild costs etc. You can probably get a set of vortec heads already done for much less than you will end up with in a set of 50yr old castings.
